Making yogurt at home is not only super easy, but it’s also much cheaper and creamier than store-bought options. Once you try homemade yogurt, you’ll be hooked—you won’t want to go back to the store version!
Wondering if you can really make yogurt in an Instant Pot? Absolutely! It might sound like a complicated process, but it’s actually incredibly simple and takes very little hands-on time—around 4 to 5 minutes. The Instant Pot does most of the work for you. Once you make your own yogurt, you’ll realize it’s so much better than anything you can buy. It’s creamier, much less tangy, and has no added sweeteners—just pure, natural yogurt.

And once you’ve tasted homemade yogurt, there’s no going back. You’ll never look at store-bought yogurt the same way again—trust me.
Ingredients:
- 8 cups whole milk*
- ¼ cup plain whole milk yogurt (for the starter culture)

Instructions:
- Prepare the milk: Start by adding 8 cups of whole milk to your 6-quart Instant Pot. Close the lid and lock it in place. Set the Instant Pot to the yogurt setting, adjusting it to boil. This step can take up to an hour, depending on the temperature of your milk and the Instant Pot.
- Cool the milk: Once the milk has boiled, carefully remove the inner pot from the Instant Pot and place it in a bowl filled with ice water. Stir the milk occasionally while it cools down to about 100 to 110°F (this should take about 15-20 minutes). Be sure to set aside 1 cup of milk before moving on to the next step.
- Add the starter yogurt: In a medium bowl, whisk together the plain yogurt (¼ cup) and the reserved 1 cup of milk. This helps to dilute the yogurt, making it easier to mix into the rest of the milk without clumping. Once it’s smooth, pour this mixture back into the milk in the Instant Pot, stirring gently to combine. Be careful not to scrape the bottom of the insert to avoid disrupting the yogurt’s texture.
- Incubate the yogurt: Return the insert to the Instant Pot and set it to the yogurt setting again. The default time is typically 8 hours, which is ideal for creamy yogurt. However, you can adjust this based on how thick or tangy you want your yogurt. The longer it sits, the thicker and more tangy it will become.
- Chill and store: After the 8 hours, remove the yogurt from the Instant Pot and transfer it to storage containers. Let it cool to room temperature, then cover and refrigerate for at least 6-8 hours to allow it to fully set and chill. Your homemade yogurt will stay fresh for up to 10 days in the fridge!
Notes:
- You can use 2% milk instead of whole milk if you prefer, but whole milk will yield a creamier texture.
Making your own yogurt at home is a great way to enjoy a healthier, more cost-effective, and customizable treat. Plus, it’s so much easier than it seems, and you’ll be amazed at how delicious it turns out!
